EA Sports. It’s in the game.
It’s a familiar moniker for many of us who’ve spent countless hours playing any one of its sports video game offerings.
But it’s one we haven’t heard for over a decade when it comes to college football.
That’s changing soon with the summer release of EA College Football 25.
With the NIL opt-in deadline April 30, here’s what we know about Nebraska’s involvement in the upcoming video game based on information obtained via public records request.
Game atmosphere Nebraska submitted two songs to EA Sports for College Football 25.
Those two songs: “Hail Varsity” and “There is No Place Like Nebraska.”
Based on a spreadsheet obtained by the Journal Star, Nebraska will have “Hail Varsity” playing for the pre-team runout and the team runout, and “There is No Place Like Nebraska” playing for touchdowns, successful point after attempts, successful field goals and postgame after victories.
Two obvious songs are missing from the spreadsheet: “Sirius” by the Alan Parsons Project and the newer “The Cornhusker” by the Killigans.
Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola is interviewed after the Red-White Spring Game on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Raiola has said he'll be in the upcoming College Football 25 video game.
KENNETH FERRIERA, Journal Star
Nebraska has walked into Memorial Stadium to the Alan Parsons Project tune since the mid-’90s and has played “The Cornhusker” in between the first and second quarters for a few years, but Nebraska doesn’t own the copyrights to those songs.
As stated in a boilerplate email from the collegiate trademark licensing company involved in game production, CLC, to Nebraska, “CLC does not handle, clear or police music, songs, chants, etc. These audio files typically fall under copyright law. EA understands that it will be solely their responsibility to clear all of these rights.”
That shouldn’t be a surprise to those who’ve played the game before as Nebraska walked out of the tunnel to crowd noise (at least in the 2011 version of NCAA Football, they did.)
Nebraska’s crowd noise will be a big part of the gameday atmosphere in the game.
Nebraska inputted that crowd noise will be played for all kickoffs, first downs, third and fourth downs for the defense, takeaways/fumble recoveries, big defensive stops and between quarters. The crowd noise might not sound the exact same for all of those game events, as Nebraska sent over an entire game’s worth of natural sound.
However, it doesn’t sound like Nebraska’s actual crowd noise will be used, as a boilerplate email reads, “these files will purely be for reference and not files EA is going to use in-game.”
Rivalry games It looks like the video game will be highlighting trophy games/rivalry games.
“Rivalry games are such a big part of college football and EA is hoping to recreate the spirit and energy surrounding as many of these rivalry games as possible,” a CLC representative wrote in a boilerplate email to Nebraska on May 25, 2023. “Please note that EA is interested in your top rivalry game — and also in any additional rivalry games. … EA is not certain that they can get to every game in year one — but they want to know about them and they plan to include as many as possible.”
Nebraska, based on email exchanges obtained between NU and Iowa, appears to have submitted information regarding their active trophy games with Iowa and Wisconsin, rather than include the historic rivalry information with teams like Oklahoma and Colorado.
“We have a trophy game with Wisconsin (that we have never won) and then the trophy game with you,” a Nebraska representative wrote to an Iowa representative.
In that email thread, Iowa said that it intends to list the Heroes Game, but “not our highest priority rivalry game as we have the LONGTIME “Floyd of Rosedale” rivalry with Minnesota, and ISU is listing the “Cy-Hawk Trophy” as their top rivalry.”
Uniforms EA Sports left no stone unturned in the development of the uniforms, as Nebraska had to send an actual uniform (or two) to EA’s Orlando office for the art team to use.
“I know this is a bit of an irksome task, but the last thing the art team wants is for your uniforms to come out looking funny or inauthentic,” EA’s Tom Fleming wrote on Oct. 25, 2023.
Earlier in 2023, Nebraska’s licensing and branding folks looped in Nebraska’s equipment managers via email to help fulfill EA’s request of “trying to make sure everything is exact, right down to the seam pattern” for the jerseys and pants. The equipment managers were asked to send six to eight close-up photos of each jersey.
Quirks It sounds like the retired jersey names in the north end zone might not make it into the game, based on an email thread obtained by the Journal Star between one of Nebraska’s licensing and branding folks and an EA Sports representative.
“Currently we are not adding a ton of names inside the stadiums themselves for ship just due to some logistical permission issues,” EA’s Thomas Fleming wrote on March 28.
However, it sounds like Nebraska does want the names to be included.
“We would like to pursue this in the future,” the Nebraska representative emailed back.
It also sounds like the flags that wave on the north side of the stadium will both be American flags at first, rather than the flag on the right being the red flag with the white Block N.
Name, image and likeness One of the biggest changes in the upcoming game is the inclusion of NIL.
If players choose to opt in, they receive $600 per year their name, image and likeness is included in the game and a free game code.
The window opened on Feb. 22 and closed Tuesday.
Nebraska’s compliance office made a four-slide PowerPoint explaining how it works — players can participate in other video game licensing opportunities if they choose because this is nonexclusive, and can opt out for later editions if they want.
However, just because they choose to opt in does not mean they will be included. EA Sports, as outlined in a document sent to student-athletes, said that teams will have an 85-man roster “based on replicating as authentic of a gameplay experience as possible, so opting in does not guarantee your NIL will be included in the game.”
The NIL aspect is the big reason why the game is back.
The reason why the game was shelved in the first place? Former Nebraska quarterback Sam Keller filed a class-action lawsuit against EA Sports because, while players' names weren’t used in the game, their likenesses were. And they weren’t compensated for it.
“People looked at the situation and thought I’m going after the [video] game because I couldn’t make it as an NFL player and needed to make a quick buck,” Keller told the Arizona Republic in 2019 after the NCAA rule change was made when student-athletes could profit off their name, image and likeness.
“I understand all that, but that was never the intent. The case was more about what’s happening now (with NIL). It was just the first of a lot of steps to change the norm to something that’s fair.”
With the deadline to opt-in being Tuesday, we’ll know soon which players are in the game, and which ones aren’t. Players who opt out, like Texas' Arch Manning, cannot be manually re-created or added to the game.
Some Nebraska players have already shared that they’re in, such as quarterback Dylan Raiola, receiver Malachi Coleman and receiver Dae’vonn Hall.
The full reveal of the game will come in May.
