UK on Alert for Kosova, Russia Fans the Flames of War in the Region, Kearns Motion Passes

Following a debate on security in the Western Balkans proposed by Member of Parliament Alicia Kearns, the British House of Commons passed on Thursday a motion on Kosova and Bosnia and Herzegovina, stating that the UK supports the territorial integrity of Kosova and condemns the attack on Banjska against the Kosova Police.

"I ask that this House moves to recognize the acute security situation in the Western Balkans, to support the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Kosova and Bosnia and Herzegovina, to condemn the attack by Serbian nationalist militants in Banjska in Kosova on September 24, 2023".

During the debate, the Conservative MP raised the alarm about the security situation in the Western Balkans, warning that the region could become the scene of a major third global conflict after Ukraine and Gaza.

Emphasizing the importance of addressing security concerns in the Western Balkans, Kerns stressed that neglecting the region would have catastrophic consequences. She referred to recent developments, including Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Serbia and the rise of pro-Russian governments in the region, as indicators of escalating tensions.

"We need to create the new security alliance between the USA, Great Britain and other NATO members with Kosova," said MP Kearns.

David Rutley, British MP and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, warned that Russia is fanning the flames of division to remove the region from the West. He said that conflict in the region must be avoided at all costs, as the consequences would be serious.

Independent MP Colonel Bob Stewart, who was the first British commander of the UN in Bosnia in the 1990s, warned that the region is threatened by instability. He called for British troops to be deployed in the Balkans. According to him, the British army would be the best battalion to send to the region for peacekeeping.
